VIOLETS ARE BLUE

Barbara Dee

The latest middle grade novel from beloved author Barbara Dee. Sweet and compelling, with a strong emotional core and a pitch perfect voice, VIOLETS ARE BLUE is the remarkable story of a girl named Wren who must grapple with a new town, a new school, and her mother's addiction.
For twelve-year-old Wren, life is suddenly full of big changes: her parents' divorce and Dad's remarriage, her move with Mom to a new town. So she distracts herself with a new obsession: watching special effects makeup videos by internet sensation Cat FX.

Of all the fantasy characters Cat FX recreates, Wren's favorite is the mermaid, but somehow she can't duplicate Cat FX's technique. Is something missing?

When Mom insists Wren pull herself away from her laptop, Wren agrees to do makeup for the middle school production of the musical Wicked. Soon she's so involved with the show, her friendship with Poppy, and dealing with Kai's crush that she isn't focused on Mom's disappearances. Or the weird lock on Mom's bedroom door. Or the number of pill bottles in Mom's medicine cabinet.

But when Wren can't ignore Mom's behavior any longer, she sets out to find CatFX, hoping her longtime idol will shine some light on her situation. Will Cat FX reveal the secret of the mermaid - and possibly something about real life?

Barbara Dee is the author of twelve middle grade novels published by Simon & Schuster, including Violets Are Blue, My Life in the Fish Tank, Maybe He Just Likes You, Everything I Know About You, Halfway Normal, and Star-Crossed. Cover reveal in Nerdy Book Club, where Barbara wrote about this is the perfect cover for this story: "It's the right cover art for a story about identity and disguises, the way we create our own truth. In VIOLETS, the main character reinvents herself constantly, not only by experimenting with special effects makeup, but also by giving herself a new name. As she's figuring out who she is, who her friends are, and how she fits into her dad's new family, she shuts her eyes to her mom's behavior - until ignoring the truth becomes impossible." With flawed, realistic characters and dynamics, this reconciliatory novel is a believable balm for young people at the mercy of adult choices and scenarios.

Dee...again successfully tackles tough topics, making them relatable for middle-grade readers.

VIOLETS ARE BLUE was named to School Library Journal's Best Middle Grade Books of 2021. It only includes 26 books, so it's a huge honor. They say: Wren is going through some difficult changes: Her father left and started a new family, and she and her mother have moved to a new city. She fills her time watching and trying to recreate the special effects makeup of a popular YouTuber. While Wren navigates tween life, her mother is also increasingly secretive. These mysterious actions elegantly unfold in Dee's well-crafted story, which deftly addresses heavy topics such as parental separation and opioid addiction. Read more...
