At one time, Bedouins and camels characterized the southeast of the Arab world, and from its shores, merchants sailed to anywhere in the world. Today, the world comes back to the Gulf countries where rich oil deposits have brought about a fabulous boom. But humans have not yet managed to tame nature. Oman is largely dominated by deserts – the sand dunes outside Al Ain and the up to 100-meter-high dunes of the Wahiba Sands are famous. The Al-Hajar Mountains meanwhile – inhospitable, craggy, rugged, wild in some places – remind us of the very origins of earth.
