LA WEHRMACHT

Jean Lopez

La fin d'un mythe

A complete illustred history of Hitler's army.
We thought we knew everything about the Wehrmacht. Because of the myth created by dozens of historians, not all of them frauds, the general public believes in the "gilded" legend: the foremost army in the world that remained invincible until it was overwhelmingly outnumbered, fighting heroically to the end without being too compromised by Nazism.

Like most legends, it is based partially on truth - the Blitzkrieg, the crushing of successive adversaries until December 1941, a marked capacity for innovation, particularly in tanks and aviation - but it is nonetheless largely exaggerated and often untrue.

To restore the truth, Jean Lopez and his team of writers have produced an unparalleled global history, its matrix forged from articles published in Guerres et Histoire (Wars and History), amplified by numerous previously unpublished contributions.

In four parts (the myth, the operations, the Luftwaffe, arms and formations), the book recounts all of the major operations, campaigns and battles (Dunkirk, the Battles of Britain, Barbarossa, Stalingrad, Kursk, Landing, Bagration, Market-Garden, Ardennes, Battle of Berlin, etc.) But it also offers more detailed and analytical chapters dissecting in particular the intellectual and operational legacy since Frederick II, the strategies in force, the logistics deployed and the true worth of troops and equipment. The subject is rounded out by testimonies collected from veterans.

Sticking to his own method, which is behind the success of his magazine and that of L'Infographie de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale (Infographics of the Second World War), JEAN LOPEZ has illustrated the book with an abundant but carefully selected iconography combining maps, diagrams, photographs and depictions of weapons and uniforms, including some infographics. Managing Editor of Guerres et Histoire, author of seminal texts particularly about the Eastern Front, Jean Lopez is now recognized as a top specialist in the history of the Second World War.
