WHAT I AM

Divya Srinivasan

A universal picture book that affirms that our complexities make us who we are.
A young narrator describes herself: a girl, a granddaughter, Indian, and American. Soon, we see the young girl as a plethora of things: selfish and generous, mean and kind, brave and mischievous. While many of these qualities oppose each other, the context and illustrations make it abundantly clear that she speaks the truth. She is a walking contradiction, and that is precisely what makes her both a unique individual and an essential piece of the greater world around her. Divya Srinivasan shows what makes us human and proud to be who we are.

'We're All So Many Things': Divya Srinivasan On Her New Book 'What I Am'... Read more...

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY ran a Four Questions interview with Divya on July 29! Read more...

This volume succeeds in restoring the dignity and nuance to identity that an all-too-common microaggression often condenses.

A charming primer for emerging readers that, when scaffolded by adult guidance, can also start conversations around identity with older readers.

A picture book celebrating the nuances of living with multiple identities.

The narrative tackles the rude ridiculousness of a question that reduces a person to their race... by cleverly expanding it to its face value - our protagonist is, like all of us, many things that cannot be summed by any simple answer, and the exploration deftly diminishes the question by expanding the person who was asked it... it's an exploration that will elicit much audience discussion.

The story's stunning conclusion will inspire readers to proudly be who they are and provide plenty of discussion opportunities for readers. This book is an outstanding and affirming story... Srinivasan's latest offering is a universal story that belongs in all collections.

While all humans can inhabit multiple identities, unfortunately these kinds of insensitive questions ("what are you?") are often lobbed at children of color, particularly those from multiracial families. "What I am is more than I can say," the girl summarizes at the book's close. How elegantly Srinivasan captures that in these pages with expressive illustrations, rendered with assured lines and an absence of visual clutter that lets this young girl take the stage - and educate us all in the way of her multi-dimensional self.
