WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWGIRLS GONE?
How the Women of Country Music Reinvented Themselves and the Industry to Bcome the Success Story They Were Never Suppsed to be
WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWGIRLS GONE? Is the story of the women of country music over the past 20 years, told through the lens of a select group of singular stars.
2019 was the year of the woman in country music. Not because the industry wanted that or aspired to it, but because they had no choice. For better or worse women in country were all anyone was talking about - a highly successful Dolly Parton podcast, a NYT podcast on women in country music that drew enormous response, a special series on NPR about the women who shaped the genre that took us back in time, and a Country Music Awards ceremony that was hosted by 3 all-time greats - all female - who then had to step aside and watch Garth Brooks collect the award for entertainer of the year.
And then there was the reporting perpetrated by the one and only Marissa R. Moss. Marissa has made a name for herself in these circles and on a national scale for being on the frontlines and ahead of the curve reporting on the systemic gender discrimination and sexual harassment that has been going on behind the spotlights on Music Row in Nashville and in arenas worldwide. She has been interviewed by NPR, the Today Show, and CBS discussing this subject. And now she is ready to bring to bear the breadth and depth of her reporting - and to offer brand new access and discovery -- to chronicle this era, this movement, this unbelievably creative, innovative and intense time.
Enter WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWGIRLS GONE? This is not an axe to grind but a success story to tell. How these women, these household names - Miranda, Kacey, Carrie, Taylor and more - became just that was not divined. It was because they were willing to do things their own way in an industry stacked against them. And boy, hello boys, did it pay off.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWGIRLS GONE? Is the story of the women of country music over the past 20 years, told through the lens of a select group of singular stars, in the vein of Sheila Weller's classic bestseller, GIRLS LIKE US, but also through their supporting cast and the up and comers and the sisterhood that has emerged in the genre. Marissa has the complete cooperation and participation of such stars as Miranda Lambert, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris and the Highwomen. And there is only more to come.
This is HIDDEN FIGURES but with fringe and eyeliner and a twang. This is THE GIRLS OF ATOMIC CITY but with a guitar and a story to tell and a set of pipes to make people want to listen. Women breaking through the glass ceiling - note it helps to have cowboy boots and the ability to throw back shots of Jack. But they didn't do it that way. They did it their own way, staking out a place in their world, doing it together, and doing it the way they knew best. To tell their own stories through song, with courage, determination, and heck, a little talent never hurt.
Marissa (Rolling Stone, Billboard, NPR), can tell tall tales like the best of them in Nashville but who has the facts and guts to back it up. There is a reason these women trust her. Marissa R. Moss is a force with a one-of-a-kind story of her own here.
