A trip to Spain after high school graduation. It seems like a dream come true for a group of four girls and two boys. They decide to spend the night in an inhospitable national park. But then they get lost and have to depend on each other for their survival. As the days pass, frustration and fear take over. How do you survive when no one can be trusted?

‘His leg... What’s that...?’ Eva stammers.

‘I think it’s broken,’ I gasp.

Britt sits down next to Fabian and takes his hand. ‘It’ll be fine,’ she

whispers. ‘Hang on.’

‘I... I...’ Fabian groans as though talking requires superhuman effort.

‘I... can’t walk. It hurts so much.’

‘If you stay here, we’ll stay too,’ Britt says. ‘We won’t leave you.’

Rosalie is crying now, long, hysterical sobs. ‘OMG, we’re all going to

die.’

‘Shut up,’ I hiss. Then I take a deep breath and say the only thing I can say under these circumstances: ‘We’ll make Fabian a splint, and then he can lean on Britt and me. Eva, find a straight branch. Britt, tear a T-shirt into strips. And Rosalie, stop crying. Right now!’ Thank God everyone does as I say. I lean over to Fabian. ‘It’ll be okay,’ I whisper. ‘I swear, Fab.’ It sounds more like a lie than a reassurance, and Fabian’s eyes tell me he knows it. ‘Do you mind if we leave Liv’s backpack behind?’ I ask quietly.
