YOU CAN'T DO THAT
This deeply personal and moving memoir charts the amazing journey of a stubborn young girl who wouldn't quit until she stood on the podium, baton in hand, raised it, and with a down- stroke, gestured to the orchestra to commence.
As the daughter of professional musicians, Marin began piano studies at age two, switched to violin at five, entered Juilliard Pre-College at seven, watched Leonard Bernstein conduct the New York Philharmonic and decided she wanted to become a conductor by age nine. From then on, Marin was unstoppable. She went on to become the first woman to serve as the head of a major orchestra in the United States, South America, Austria and Britain, and she is, as the New York Times put it, not only "a formidable musician and a powerful communicator" but also "a conductor with a vision."
You Can't Do That is not just the memoir of a musician. Or of being raised in a music-obsessed family. Or the rigors of classical music training. Or the temerity of aspiring to be a conductor of a world class orchestra. That is all only backdrop for the real story. This is the story of a child, a girl, a young woman, a gay woman, an adult determined to break down walls and ac- complish a goal previously reserved for men. And it's the story of anyone who would not take no for an answer.
Marin Alsop enrolled at Yale at sixteen and transferred to Juilliard for her Bachelors and Mas- ters in violin performance. From there she was the first and only woman awarded the Kous- sevitzky Conducting prize by the Tanglewood Music Center, and she was awarded the Leon- ard Bernstein Conducting Fellowship and became a student of Leonard Bernstein. Marin was also the first conductor to be awarded a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship. She is music director laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and chief conductor of the Vienna Ra- dio Symphony Orchestra and the Ravinia Festival, as well as Principal Guest Conductor of London's Philharmonia Orchestra. She makes her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic this year. Marin was the subject of The Conductor, a documentary film on her life, which debuted at New York's 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and was nominated for an Emmy.
James Dale has collaborated with several prominent figures on books including: Alpha Docs with Johns Hopkins cardiologist, Dan Munoz (S&S), and the New York Times bestsell- 45 er Just Show Up, with Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. (HarperCollins).
